Airport security equipment installed

2nd June 2023

Work starts on Monday (5 June) to install new baggage-screening equipment in the airport departures hall. Several large items of equipment are scheduled for delivery from 8am and motorists are advised to take care when driving to and from the airport. A traffic management system will be in place and a traffic warden will be on site to advise passengers.

This work is part of a £3 million project which will enhance air passengers’ experience by improving customer facilities and upgrading security technology.

Before the installation could begin, car hire desks were relocated to the Arrivals Terminal, the Information Desk moved next to the café in the check-in area of Departures, and the cash machines in the Departure Lounge are in the process of moving to the entrance to the departure gates.

These adjustments were necessary before the new security technology could be installed. The new system uses advanced imaging systems to provide clearer images of cabin baggage, which should eventually allow liquids and laptops to be scanned while remaining in passengers’ hand luggage. However, the existing rules for liquids and electronics will remain in place until the new equipment has been tested and all security staff have been trained to use it.

Head of Security, Maria Le Tiec, said: “As part of our drive to ensure that we put customer experience at the heart of everything we do, we are making a significant investment in the airport security system, which will ultimately ease the process for passengers. In the meantime, the departures area will look a little different as these changes are made.

“We will erect new signage to make journeys as clear as possible and will be here to help passengers navigate the new layout. We apologise for the disruption, but we need to adapt the existing baggage screening lanes to install the new equipment.”

This work is underway now to allow time for training and to ensure the best possible passenger experience before the new security equipment becomes mandatory in June 2024.
