Work starts on Future Airport project
From Jersey Airport
14th January 2020
The project to develop the new integrated terminal at Jersey Airport is now underway with enabling works having started in preparation for the first phase of the project. The scheduled completion date for the new terminal project is 2022.
The first key phases of the project to be addressed in 2020 include:
- The creation of a new two-storey passenger pier along with an upgrade and realignment of aircraft stands to create more space for passengers and to enable Jersey Airport to handle the trend towards larger aircraft
- The realignment of the current arrivals process, which will involve the part removal of the existing arrivals terminal to create space for the contractors to access the passenger pier and establish a works compound
- The development of the airport’s forecourt and a realignment of the roads to create a 30-metre exclusion zone in front of the terminal, bringing Jersey into line with airports across Europe. This phase will also bring improvements to the space that is currently available for drop-offs and pick-ups.
Ports of Jersey has appointed Volkers Fitzpatrick as its main contractor to oversee construction of the integrated terminal, working alongside local company RoK. Volkers Fitzpatrick is one of the UK’s leading engineering and construction companies with vast experience in carrying out major redevelopment projects. RoK is a local construction company, which has been involved in many high-profile projects in recent years, including College Gardens, the Police HQ and Les Quennevais School. The removal of the arrivals’ building will be carried out by Jersey-based demolition specialists, DB Cummins and is expected to start in April 2020.
On behalf of Ports of Jersey, CEO Matt Thomas, says, “Without doubt, this exciting and ambitious project is one of the most significant construction projects undertaken in the Island in recent years. In effect, we are creating a ‘new’ airport, a 21st Century gateway, which ultimately will future proof our operational needs, meet the growth ambitions of our airline partners and provide a fantastic travel experience for our customers. The terminal will incorporate new ideas and new technology, capture the ‘Spirit of Jersey’ and create an airport that we can all be proud of. We are now finalising our plans to minimise the disruption for our customers, which is expected in a project of this scale”.
Ports of Jersey has worked closely with business partners and key passenger groups in the development of the plans and is committed to actively engaging with its staff, business partners and the local community as the project develops over time. This will include regular progress updates through its own dedicated Future Airport pages on jerseyairport.com website and social media forums as well as briefings with media agencies at key stages of the project. In the meantime, any questions and comments from the public can be emailed to email@example.com
Matt Thomas concludes, “We are looking forward to starting construction and giving everyone the opportunity to see the exciting benefits this development will eventually bring to the Island and our community, together with the sense of pride we can all take from its completion”.
