Why infrastructure matters
A great airport experience depends on what you can’t always see: resilient systems, reliable power, smart layouts and clear airfield circulation. Our programme modernises critical assets and removes bottlenecks so the airport can operate smoothly in all seasons.
Hangar 4 – Deconstruction
Hangar 4 had reached the end of its useful life. Taking it down has:
- Unlocked airfield space: Creating room for safer movements, future apron optimisation and better stand allocation.
- Enable phasing: Providing flexible construction zones with less impact on day‑to‑day operations.
- Reduce maintenance burden: Retiring an aging structure lowers whole‑life costs and improves safety.
- Enabled great views of the runway for passengers and their friends and family.
How we’ve done it:
- A controlled, environmentally responsible deconstruction with material segregation and responsible waste handling.
- Careful planning around airside operations to minimise disruption and maintain safety at all times.
Other infrastructure improvements
We’re also improving our infrastructure with:
- Systems renewal: Upgrades to building services and critical operational systems to enhance reliability.
- Energy and efficiency: Targeted improvements to reduce energy use and support sustainability ambitions.
- Wayfinding backbone: Digital and physical infrastructure to keep passengers informed during phasing.
