Jersey Airport no longer under ‘Special Attention’ with immediate effect

Published: 20 June 2025

Jersey Airport is no longer under ‘Special Attention’ from the aviation regulator with immediate effect, Ports of Jersey has confirmed.

This extra level of oversight from the Office of the Director of Civil Aviation (OCDA) was introduced at the end of last year when the Airport made changes to strengthen its operational leadership team.

Additional oversight is a common step for regulators to take during periods of significant change and, in this instance, to enable the new team to settle into their roles.

Now, after several months of regular audits, reporting, and positive engagement, the regulator has confirmed that the additional oversight is no longer needed.

Ashley Maggs (Mr) Airport Operations Director said: “We welcome confirmation from the Director of Civil Aviation that the additional oversight is no longer needed. I’m very lucky to work with such proud and dedicated colleagues across Jersey Airport operations.

“We have a highly professional team, with a wide variety of skills, that works to ensure the airport operates smoothly. They include firefighters, security officers, air traffic controllers and our customer experience team, whose focus every day is on helping our passengers to enjoy faster, easier and friendlier travel experiences.

“Jersey Airport complies with all aviation regulations and safe, secure operations will always be our most important priority. But no company can stand still, and last year we restructured our operational management team at the airport to keep pace with the changing requirements of 21st century travellers.

“We have exciting plans to create an airport that every Islander can be proud of – built to last, and ready for the future.”

What does additional oversight mean in practice?

When big changes happen at an airport – such as bringing in a new leadership team – the regulator may implement a period of enhanced oversight called ‘Special Attention’. It just means there’s more engagement, more reporting, and sometimes extra audits to make sure high standards are maintained during the transition.

In Jersey’s case, the Airport remained fully compliant and fully operational throughout. The regulator has now seen enough stability in the team to step back to the usual level of oversight.

Jersey Airport is one of the most heavily regulated organisations on the Island, working with multiple agencies including the ODCA, UK Civil Aviation Authority, and European Aviation Safety Agency. That’s what helps make air travel one of the safest forms of transport in the world – and Jersey Airport takes that responsibility seriously.

What’s already improved?

Passengers may have already noticed some of the recent changes in action:

  • Security queues are short: 99% of passengers are clearing security in under 15 minutes
  • Less time waiting for bags: for more than 90% of flights bags are delivered to the carousels within 20 minutes of planes arriving at the gate
  • Special Assistance service is receiving fantastic feedback from those who need extra support
  • Joined-up teams: Customer service, security, and airport operations have been brought together to improve the overall travel experience

What’s next?

Later this year, work will begin on redeveloping the Airport Departures Lounge – a major investment in the passenger experience and a key step in modernising the airport for the future.
