Big changes coming to Jersey Airport’s Departure Lounge

Published: 15 July 2025

Jersey Airport’s Departure Lounge is about to get a whole lot more Jersey. Work kicks off next month on a major redesign that promises to bring a fresher, more welcoming experience to passengers – all with a big nod to the island’s unique character, natural beauty, and vibrant culture.

Originally opened back in 1997, the lounge has done its job for nearly three decades – but today’s travellers expect more than just seats and snacks. This investment is all about flow, comfort, accessibility, and giving travellers a memorable last impression of Jersey, whether they’re heading off or going home.

Think sun-dappled tree tunnels and granite cottages…

The new space will take cues from Jersey’s landscape – from quiet hedgerow lanes and wild coastal paths, to Martello towers, woodland glades, and iconic island textures. It’s not just a facelift; it’s a celebration of Jersey’s outdoor lifestyle, cultural roots, and modern multicultural identity, all reflected in the materials, colours and layout of the space.

And while design and functionality are at the heart of the project, the focus is firmly on creating a space that feels good to be in – welcoming, practical, and thoughtfully designed for real people.

Travellers can look forward to:

  • more food and retail options
  • dedicated quiet zones
  • a cosy family space
  • views over the runway

And a Sunflower Room to support passengers who need to break away from the noise and lights of the departure lounge

What’s happening first?

Phase 1 begins next month, most of it behind the scenes, and includes:

  • Clearing out some back-office areas to create temporary walkways for when the main construction works starts
  • Moving seating areas to make room for the changes
  • Setting up a pop-up café for passengers
  • Retiring the airport’s disruption desk

The work is being carefully phased to minimise impact during the peak summer months, with core services like the café and World Duty Free will stay open throughout.

“This investment is a big step in the evolution of Jersey Airport,” said Matt Thomas, CEO of Ports of Jersey. “The main construction works will start at the end of the summer season and last around 14-months.  As with any project of this scale there will be some disruption as we build a much more welcoming, efficient, and unmistakably Jersey space for travellers.  We really appreciate everyone’s patience and look forward to delivering something the whole island can feel proud of.”

Inspired by you

This project has been shaped by extensive public feedback – where people told us what really matters to them.  From deep connections to the island’s nature and community, to a desire for travel spaces that feel less generic and more authentically local.

Rather than leaning too hard on nostalgia, the stakeholder feedback favoured a design that aims to channel the living, breathing energy of Jersey – its colour, its texture, and its forward-facing spirit.

This investment in the departure lounge is part of a wider commitment from Ports of Jersey to deliver a faster, friendlier and easier airport experience – one that reflects the island we love, and the people who pass through it every day.
